Military Service in Morocco
Military service represents a civic duty and a legal obligation as stipulated in Article 38 of the Constitution of the Kingdom. This article mandates eligible citizens to contribute to the defense of the homeland and the integrity of its territory. Beyond instilling military discipline, the program is primarily aimed at the socio-economic integration of youth. After its discontinuation in 2006 due to budgetary constraints following 40 years of operation, military service was reinstated in August 2018, with the regulations taking effect and being implemented in 2019.
From Registration to Selection
The process begins with registration, a phase during which authorities compile lists and identify young individuals who are eligible to undertake military service. Notifications are dispatched to the concerned individuals or their families. Following this, they are invited to visit the platform Tajnid.ma to provide their personal information for the potential formation of the next contingent. This step is critical and is strictly governed by the Central Registration Commission, which establishes the criteria for determining who is required to fill out the form.
Subsequently, specialized commissions convene at each prefecture or province, presided over by the governor or their representative, along with representatives from the FAR, the Royal Gendarmerie, and public health sectors. This commission is responsible for determining which individuals will advance to the next stage. Those selected will receive a call order detailing where they need to report, when, and what documents to present before the commission, which will reassess their information, including identity, family and social situation, and grounds for exemption.
Exemptions from military service are delineated as follows: physical or health incapacity, being the family provider, ongoing studies, having a sibling called to serve during the same period, or being summoned for service in another formation or institution. Prior to incorporation, the final selection takes place during which candidates undergo a series of tests in front of the military selection and incorporation commission. This stage begins with a medical examination to ascertain if the candidate is fit for training, which includes checks such as vision acuity, blood pressure measurements, and a review of their medical history.
Following this, candidates are subjected to physical fitness assessments and psychometric tests to determine their physical and mental suitability.
Once declared fit, the individual is selected by the commission and added to the list of those who will form the contingent. Various centers mobilize the necessary resources to welcome the new recruits across all designated locations throughout the country. Once incorporated, the recruit embarks on a 12-month training program that consists of two primary phases: basic military training and professional training.
The basic military training lasts for four months, aimed at instilling a strong sense of discipline, organizational skills, and the values of good citizenship and patriotism through physical preparation, combat arts, citizenship education, and both theoretical and practical teachings. This is followed by eight months of professional training, where recruits gain expertise in various fields such as mechanics, electronics, and more.
The revamped military service thus enhances the socio-economic inclusion of young Moroccans in society and the job market upon completion of their service. It is noteworthy that recruits may continue a military career after their service.
