UNICEF Highlights Dire Conditions for Minors in Ceuta
UNICEF has issued a critical warning regarding the dire humanitarian and health conditions faced by hundreds of unaccompanied minors on the streets of the occupied city of Ceuta. The organization is calling on relevant authorities to expedite the identification of these minors and to provide necessary care and shelter for them. This situation has been exacerbated by warnings from Amnesty International, which highlighted the additional risks that women and girls encounter under the current living circumstances, emphasizing the lack of adequate protective mechanisms against various forms of violence and exploitation.
In response to these pressing challenges, the Spanish government announced the establishment of two new shelters with a capacity to accommodate 1,800 individuals. This initiative aims to alleviate the mounting pressure on the existing infrastructure designated for receiving migrants and minors. This extraordinary pressure has its roots in a massive influx of migrants that occurred in late July, where approximately 72,000 individuals crossed into the city. Although the vast majority have returned to Morocco, dozens of migrants and minors remain stranded without adequate health facilities or shelters.
