Solidarity with Union Leader Against Continuous Harassment
The Unified Socialist Party branch in Sidi Zouin has publicly expressed its unwavering support for Abdelhamid Moukiti, a party member and the Secretary General of the regional union office of the Popular Bank in Marrakech-Beni Mellal. This solidarity stems from what the party describes as ongoing harassment and provocations directed at Moukiti due to his union activities and his significant contributions to the defense of workers' rights and achievements.
This statement of solidarity was released in a press release that was reviewed by the newspaper “Al Amq.” The party branch asserted that the actions targeting Moukiti are part of a broader pattern of practices that threaten trade union freedoms and undermine the foundational roles that unions play in advocating for the legitimate rights of workers. The tone of the release was notably cautionary, highlighting attempts to silence voices advocating for social and professional rights. It emphasized that any infringement on the freedom of trade union work constitutes a violation of principles enshrined in national laws and international charters related to fundamental rights and freedoms, with particular emphasis on the right to organize and engage in legitimate activism.
Call for Collective Action and Solidarity
In light of this situation, the party branch recalled a recent protest organized in solidarity with a suspended employee, viewing it as a reflection of the strong support that the union framework enjoys among workers. The statement pointed out that the overwhelming participation and backing from democratic and human rights activists in Marrakech showcased the failure of attempts to disrupt the demands for workers’ rights. The party reiterated its “absolute and unconditional” solidarity with Abdelhamid Moukiti against what it described as targeted harassment and pressure. Furthermore, it condemned actions aimed at undermining the union's work and curtailing associated freedoms, urging relevant authorities to halt all forms of pressure and provocation that may affect union activists due to their legitimate positions or activities.
The release also called on various democratic, human rights, and union forces to enhance vigilance, solidarity, and coordinated efforts in defense of rights and freedoms, especially in light of what has been perceived as an increase in threats to union and social achievements. The Unified Socialist Party branch in Sidi Zouin concluded that targeting activists will not deter them from their commitment to uphold dignity, social justice, and workers' rights; rather, it will intensify their resolve to continue the democratic struggle against various forms of repression and injustice.
