Unprecedented Franco-Moroccan Treaty on the Horizon
On Wednesday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, announced that King Mohammed VI is set to make a "scheduled" state visit to Paris. During a joint press conference held in Rabat, Bourita emphasized the significance of this upcoming visit, stating that it will feature a unique and unprecedented event: the signing of a Moroccan-French treaty. This treaty is expected to be the first of its kind for Morocco with any European nation, marking a milestone in bilateral relations.
Efforts to Restore Trust Between Algeria and France
In a separate development, French Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin visited Algeria on Monday as part of ongoing efforts to alleviate tensions between the two nations, which have been strained since 2024. Darmanin revealed that he discussed strategies for mending relations with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, asserting, "We talked about the work we need to continue in order to rebuild trust between two countries that respect each other, namely France and Algeria." The French minister's visit followed his arrival in the Algerian capital on Sunday, where he was welcomed by his Algerian counterpart, Lotfi Boujemaa. The two ministers engaged in extensive discussions about judicial cooperation, combating organized crime, and the situation of French journalist Christophe Glaz in Algerian custody.
