Unprecedented Hail in Marrakech: Could Snow Follow in France?

A Historic Hailstorm Blankets Marrakech

On April 10, 2026, an extraordinary hailstorm transformed the vibrant city of Marrakech into a winter wonderland, leaving residents in awe. Within minutes, the usually warm and sunny landscape was shrouded in several centimeters of hail, creating an illusion of snowfall right in the heart of spring. This unexpected weather phenomenon has sparked widespread astonishment on social media, with many sharing viral videos and expressing their disbelief at the surreal sight of the city blanketed in white.

Marrakech typically enjoys mild weather during this time, with rainfall rarely exceeding 25 to 35 mm in such a brief period. However, as the storm raged, the **General Directorate of Meteorology** reported that snow was likely to fall on the mountain ranges of Morocco, while a notable cold front was also settling over France, raising the intriguing question: where might snow appear next?

From Hail to Snow: A Rare Spring Transition

The ferocity of the hailstorm on Friday left Marrakech under a thick layer of ice, with reports indicating that the city experienced between 25 and 35 mm of precipitation, including hailstones of 3 to 5 cm accumulating on the ground. Major streets were transformed into icy corridors, posing significant challenges for traffic and prompting authorities to urge motorists to exercise caution. Social media was abuzz with reactions, as one user remarked, "It feels like we’re in Moscow," while another questioned, "Is this really snow? In April? In Marrakech?" The media echoed the general disbelief, with headlines emphasizing the surreal nature of the event.

As Marrakech began to recover from the hailstorm, the General Directorate of Meteorology issued alerts for several provinces in northern and central Morocco, anticipating snowfall over the upcoming weekend. Forecasts predict up to 20 cm of snow at elevations starting from 1,800 meters, particularly in regions such as Midelt, Khénifra, Ifrane, Azilal, and Tinghir. Meteorologists indicate that the interaction of a cold drop from an Atlantic depression with warmer, humid air at lower altitudes contributed to the formation of powerful cumulonimbus clouds, resulting in hail at lower elevations and snow in mountainous areas. Although such springtime weather instability is not unheard of, it remains a rare occurrence in April.

Shifting focus to France, weather patterns have also dramatically altered. Following temperatures exceeding 30 °C in the Southwest on April 6 and 7, **Météo-France** has reported a drop of 10 to 15 °C due to a depression situated near the British Isles. This weather system is sweeping across the country from southwest to northeast, bringing rain from the **Pyrenees** to Alsace, while colder air is lowering the rain-snow line to approximately 800 to 1,000 meters. Initial snowflakes have appeared in the **Massif Central** and the western **Pyrenees**, with the **Northern Alps** expecting significant snowfall above 1,800 to 2,000 meters. Meanwhile, lowland regions can anticipate primarily cold rain with maximum temperatures hovering around 10 to 12 °C, before a shift to drier, sunnier conditions is expected by Tuesday as high-pressure systems move back in.
