Unprecedented Security Deployment: Unionists Protest Restrictions in Laayoune

Unionists in Laayoune Condemn Unprecedented Security Measures

The Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) in Laayoune, located in southern Morocco, has reported that local authorities have prevented members of the organization representing phosphate retirees from holding a meeting on April 16, 2026. The CDT has called for the lifting of all forms of siege and restrictions, urging respect for labor freedoms as guaranteed by the constitution and national charters.

In a statement received by the newspaper "Voice of Morocco," the regional office of the CDT indicated that the union branches were convening to mobilize for the upcoming May 1, 2026, labor day. However, members of the phosphate retirees' sector were taken aback by an unprecedented and extensive security presence that involved various security agencies.

The CDT expressed that the prohibition of its members from accessing the union headquarters without prior notification constitutes a blatant violation of existing laws and a clear infringement on the rights and labor freedoms guaranteed constitutionally, especially the right to association and union activity.

Union representatives in Laayoune highlighted that the phosphate sector has been part of the CDT for two years and responsibly participated in the May 1, 2025, march without any recorded violations of the organization's basic or internal regulations. They maintained their commitment to the principles of the organization and adhered to the decisions of both central and regional bodies, as well as national directives.

The union has vehemently condemned what it describes as a "siege" on the CDT headquarters in Laayoune, deeming it a serious assault on the sanctity of the union office. They hold the responsible authorities entirely accountable for these violations and any ensuing tensions.
