Unprecedented Surge in Electricity Demand in Morocco: A Record Achievement

Record-Breaking Demand for Electricity in Morocco

In a remarkable milestone, Morocco has reported the highest electricity demand in its history, reaching a peak consumption of 8,400 megawatts in July 2026. This significant increase in demand is indicative of several factors, including rising temperatures, expanding economic activity, and an overall surge in consumption. The national electricity and drinking water office (ONEE) revealed this information during the ninth session of its board of directors, highlighting the continuous growth in the country’s energy consumption.

The newly recorded peak surpasses the previous high of 7,990 megawatts established in 2025, marking an impressive increase of 410 megawatts within just a year. This growth reflects a broader trend where the national demand for electricity in 2025 reached approximately 49 terawatt-hours, showcasing a substantial growth rate of 7.4% compared to 2024. Such figures underscore the ongoing upward trajectory in Morocco's electricity consumption, driven not only by climatic conditions but also by an expanding economy and increasing energy needs.

This unprecedented demand for electricity poses both opportunities and challenges for Morocco as it continues to develop its infrastructure to meet the energy needs of its citizens and industries. The country’s efforts to enhance its energy production capabilities will be crucial in maintaining this growth while ensuring sustainability and reliability in electrical supply.
