Spanish Police Dismantle Human Smuggling Operation
On August 21, 2026, the Spanish police announced a significant operation that led to the dismantling of a human smuggling network suspected of facilitating more than twenty illegal border crossings between Spain and France. This operation was the result of an extensive investigation, conducted in collaboration with French authorities, which successfully identified a trio of individuals believed to be orchestrating the transport of undocumented migrants from the province of Alicante to France, primarily through the La Jonquera-Le Perthus border crossing.
The investigation was prompted by information received from French authorities, who had detected numerous border crossings by a vehicle linked to the main suspect. Between May and June 2026, this suspect reportedly completed at least seven trips along a similar route, connecting Alicante to French territory. Spanish police emphasized that the analysis of the travel patterns and the constant exchange of intelligence between both countries were crucial in establishing that the network facilitated over twenty irregular cross-border transfers.
Financial Gains from Illegal Activities
According to investigators, the smuggling network charged approximately 200 euros for each migrant transported. Each vehicle was reportedly capable of carrying five to six individuals per trip, allowing the organization to generate nearly 100,000 euros in profits. This lucrative operation highlighted the financial motivations driving such illegal activities.
In the course of the investigation, French authorities issued a European Investigation Order, which enabled Spanish police to carry out a search at the residence of the main suspect in Alicante. During this operation, officers seized 3,190 euros in cash, personal documents, vehicle-related paperwork, and taxi service cards that included the suspect's phone number.
The main suspect was apprehended while attempting to cross the border with several undocumented migrants aboard one of his vehicles. In total, three individuals were arrested, with two of them placed in provisional detention, as confirmed by the police statement.
