Unraveling the Phone Theft Scandal at Casablanca Airport

A Shocking Revelation at Casablanca Airport

The ongoing trial regarding the extensive theft of mobile phones at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca has uncovered startling details that have left many astonished. One of the defendants has confessed to selling the stolen goods in order to fund a family celebration, while his co-defendants have categorically denied the allegations against them. During the proceedings at the Casablanca Court of Appeal, one accused individual elaborated on the tactics used to target shipments destined for Africa. On January 10, 2025, he managed to conceal forty devices on his person to evade the vigilance of airport security personnel. He claimed that a portion of the money obtained from these sales was utilized to finance an "Aqiqa," a traditional birth celebration for his wife's niece, emphasizing that financial difficulties faced by his relatives motivated his criminal actions. It was noted that an initial transaction in Berrechid had already yielded 35,000 dirhams, out of which a commission of 5,000 dirhams was paid to an intermediary.

Magnitude of the Theft and Legal Consequences

This case, as detailed by Al3omk, revolves around the disappearance of over 600 mobile phones from the cargo area, leading to an estimated loss exceeding 1.5 million dirhams. The accused individuals are facing severe penalties for organized theft, compounded by the nighttime circumstances of the offenses and their status as employees. During the hearings, the prosecution highlighted the proactive approach of the primary suspect, who was the only one to voluntarily approach the authorities to substantiate the findings of the preliminary investigation.

In stark contrast, the other defendants have opted for outright denial. One technician asserted that he was abroad at the time of the thefts and supported his claim with travel documents. Another colleague also disputed the accusations, arguing that the presence of scanners and royal gendarmerie searches rendered the area secure. To assess the validity of these claims, the presiding judge ordered the release of surveillance footage capturing movements within the international warehouse, aiming to clarify the circumstances surrounding this significant theft.
