International Human Rights Association Advocates for Sahrawi Activists

On October 7, 2026, the International Human Rights Association based in Berlin issued a fervent appeal for the unconditional and immediate release of nine Sahrawi activists who have been engaged in a hunger strike since September 23 while imprisoned in Morocco. The organization has urged the German federal government, alongside international human rights organizations, to take decisive action to protect the health and freedoms of these individuals who are courageously protesting against ongoing human rights violations.

In their statement, the Association emphasized that the hunger strike represents a peaceful protest against the mistreatment of the Gdeim Izik group prisoners. They expressed unwavering solidarity with these activists and placed full responsibility for their physical and mental well-being squarely on the shoulders of the Moroccan authorities. Furthermore, the organization reiterated its demand for the immediate release of the Gdeim Izik prisoners, insisting that both Morocco and European nations must uphold their obligations relating to human rights.

Call for Compliance with International Recommendations

The organization highlighted the importance of adhering to the recommendations put forth by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the UN Committee against Torture. These bodies, which called for the release of the prisoners in 2023, reiterated their stance in May 2026, emphasizing the urgent need for Morocco to comply with international human rights standards. Additionally, the Association urged member states of the European Union to adopt a decisive stance regarding the human rights violations occurring in Western Sahara.

With deep concern for the deteriorating health conditions of the nine hunger strikers, the International Human Rights Association has renewed its appeal to both the German government and international human rights organizations to act swiftly and decisively to ensure the health and freedom of the activists involved in this critical protest.
