Urgent Call for Action: Spanish Beef Producers Demand Morocco Reopen Borders

Current Agricultural and Livestock Issues in Spain

In a recent discussion featuring prominent figures such as Jorge Jaramillo, Ángel Sánchez Crespo, and Aurora De Pablos, the pressing matters concerning Spain's agricultural and livestock sectors were highlighted. Beef producers have urgently appealed to the Ministry to expedite negotiations with Morocco, which stands as their primary export market. The closure of Moroccan borders, initiated a year ago due to the emergence of dermatosis cases in Gerona, has significantly impacted the industry. The Association of Beef Producers (Asoprovoc) has expressed concerns regarding the influx of highly competitive markets, particularly from Brazil, which have further complicated the situation and introduced challenges that were previously non-existent.

The halt in exports has led to an oversaturation of livestock in the domestic market. In response to this crisis, Asaja has announced that two shipments are set to depart imminently, as an agreement to resolve the impasse appears to be on the horizon. This proactive measure aims to alleviate the burden on local producers and restore balance to the market.
