Urgent Call for Infrastructure Improvement in Marrakech's Abwab Area

Dire Infrastructure Conditions in Abwab Marrakech

The residents of the Abwab Marrakech area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Menara district in Marrakech, are grappling with a catastrophic state of roads and infrastructure. This disturbing reality has become a significant concern for the local population, raising questions about the fate of previous promises made for rehabilitation. Following the recent rainfall, the fragility of the road network in the region has been starkly exposed, with streets and alleys transforming into areas riddled with potholes and waterlogged patches. This situation has led to recurrent damage to numerous vehicles, as well as substantial difficulties for pedestrians trying to navigate the area.

Many residents have expressed that the situation has become unbearable due to the lack of comprehensive intervention to repair the roads. They highlighted that recent repairs were minimal and primarily focused on the street adjacent to the "Dhiaa" company’s office, neglecting other major roadways suffering from similar deterioration.

This scenario has reignited concerns regarding the commitment of the "Dhiaa" company to its previous pledges, especially following a meeting held on April 8, 2022, at the recommendation of the chairwoman of the municipal council. This meeting, chaired by her fourth deputy in charge of urban planning and attended by company representatives, residents, and other stakeholders, resulted in an agreement to rehabilitate the roads and establish new public facilities to accommodate the urban expansion in the area. However, nearly four years later, these commitments remain unfulfilled.

Local sources indicate that these obligations have not been executed as required, with several facilities remaining abandoned, while repairs have only affected limited sections of the infrastructure. This has adversely impacted the quality of life in the region.

Additionally, it has been reported that these delays have hindered the issuance of various administrative documents, particularly the conformity certificate for several housing projects in areas 23, 24, 25, and 26. This directly affects the delivery of apartments to residents.

Today, attention turns to Fatima Zahra Mansouri, the chairwoman of the Marrakech municipal council, for urgent intervention to address these discrepancies, especially as the residents continue to suffer after years of neglect and the absence of a clear vision for managing this issue.

The pressing question remains: how long will the residents of Abwab Marrakech wait for a genuine reform that restores their infrastructure and guarantees them the minimum conditions for a decent living?
