The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has expressed her admiration for the swift and effective handling of the recent migration crisis in Ceuta by the authorities of both Spain and Morocco. In a letter addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, she highlighted the importance of a cohesive European response, emphasizing solidarity among member states in tackling such pressing issues. In her correspondence, von der Leyen praised the rapid repatriation of individuals who had entered Ceuta illegally from Morocco, indicating that both Spanish and Moroccan authorities managed the situation adeptly. She revealed that the European Union is already engaging with Moroccan authorities to forge a more structured and forward-looking alliance aimed at addressing these challenges comprehensively. She outlined a five-point action plan focusing on enhancing cooperation with EU partners to prevent irregular migration, strengthening external borders, establishing early warning systems, dismantling trafficking networks, and improving return processes.
"Our experiences have demonstrated the vast and varied challenges associated with migration. Regardless of the nature of these challenges, they necessitate a unified European response characterized by collective action and solidarity," von der Leyen asserted, ensuring that Spain has the unwavering support of the EU in these endeavors.
