US and Morocco Collaborate to Establish Drone Warfare Training Hub for African Forces

New Training Hub for Advanced Drone Operations

The United States and Morocco are embarking on an ambitious project to create a military training center that will focus on equipping African forces with the necessary skills for drone operations, as well as preparing them for complex combat environments and the challenges posed by emerging technologies. This initiative, known as the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), is a collaboration between the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, formalized through a recently signed memorandum of understanding. Located in Tan-Tan, the center is slated for completion by 2030 and will feature a comprehensive training space, a dedicated drone academy, and an innovation hub aimed at developing cost-effective counterterrorism technologies.

AMTEC is designed to provide a robust training range that can accommodate exercises across various operational spectrums and in environments where traditional military tactics may be challenged. The drone academy will focus specifically on training personnel in the operation of small unmanned aircraft, facilitating both strike missions and intelligence-gathering operations. General Dagvin Anderson, the AFRICOM commander, emphasized that this partnership is a significant opportunity for regional entities to engage in experimentation, innovation, and the development of adaptable solutions in the face of rapidly evolving technological landscapes.

Strengthening Multinational Military Training

This new training facility is a natural extension of Morocco's increasing role as a hub for multinational military training initiatives. Earlier this year, the US Army announced plans to introduce drone training as part of the African Lion 2026 exercises, which will commence in Morocco. These training programs will include practical courses aimed at integrating various systems, with a focus on hands-on flight operations for a select group of 16 participants. This effort is part of a broader strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced digital systems into military exercises, which will also feature a field-based testing and innovation center to enhance ongoing drills.

Morocco's military training landscape has evolved significantly, with previous technology-focused training programs being conducted in collaboration with US forces. Notably, the electronic warfare instruction during the African Lion 2024 exercises marked an important step in integrating advanced technological capabilities into military operations. As the establishment of AMTEC progresses, it is expected to further solidify Morocco's status as a key player in regional military training and experimentation efforts.
