US Military Conducts Field Tests of LRPM System in Morocco

The United States military recently revealed that it successfully executed a field test of its Long Range Precision Munitions (LRPM) system during the African Lion 2026 exercises held in Morocco last May. According to a report from the US Army, the tests took place in the Tan-Tan region, where five LRPM munitions were launched in two phases on May 2 and May 4. These exercises simulated the execution of synchronized strikes deep into enemy territory.

In the first phase, two munitions were launched to carry out a synchronized strike, followed by the launch of three additional munitions in the second phase. This operation was overseen by an operational user from the US Army, in a demonstration of what the military termed "one-to-many control," showcasing the system's capability to perform tasks with a high degree of autonomy.

Advanced Capabilities and Future Prospects

This field trial is part of the US Army's Launched Effects Lethal program, aimed at developing munitions and systems capable of delivering precision strikes at extended ranges while reducing the need for complex additional equipment. The LRPM system boasts a range of over 290 kilometers, featuring tube-launched munitions with semi-autonomous capabilities that allow human operators to remain in the control loop. Furthermore, the system can coordinate multiple simultaneous strikes against a single target or multiple targets.

The LRPM system comprises the Altius 700 aircraft and a payload designed by the US government, enabling military leaders to target high-value locations deep within the battlefield. The system operates multiple munitions within a connected group, a concept referred to by the US Army as “Wolfpack.” During the African Lion 2026 exercises, the US Army tested the LRPM system within a framework exclusively composed of LRPM munitions, under a concept termed “hunter-killer” that enables independent operations and simultaneous strikes.

According to an operational user involved in the testing, the performance of the LRPM system was noted to be precise and reliable, praising its capability to integrate long-range strike capabilities using familiar platforms and infrastructure, without the need for significant additional equipment or logistical requirements. This test is part of a US armament program undergoing a “rapid prototyping” pathway, with the US Army announcing that the LRPM system remains on schedule, with field deployment expected before the end of 2027.
