New Leadership at the Archdiocese of Rabat
The Vatican has officially appointed Father Mario Leon Dorado as the coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Rabat, a significant move announced in a press release this Saturday. This decision comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation concerning Cardinal Cristobal Lopez Romero, who is currently facing serious allegations of sexual violence. At the age of 52, Father Dorado has been an active member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) and has dedicated nearly 25 years of his ministry to the Moroccan Sahara. His new role as coadjutor grants him an automatic succession right, meaning that should the current archbishop retire or pass away, Father Dorado will seamlessly step into the leadership role of the archdiocese.
Previously, in early August, Dorado was appointed as the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Rabat, tasked with overseeing the archdiocese temporarily during the inquiry process. The cardinal, who has been in his position since 2017, has stepped back from all activities to avoid any interference with the Vatican's investigation, which began in July. Allegations have surfaced from five women, including churchgoers, who have accused the 74-year-old prelate of sexual misconduct.

As part of the ongoing investigation, two Vatican-appointed investigators traveled to Rabat to interview several individuals, including alleged victims and diocesan members. The results of this inquiry are expected to determine the future direction of the case against Cardinal Lopez Romero. Reports from the French news agency AFP have revealed harrowing testimonies from two adult women, detailing repeated sexual assaults and inappropriate physical gestures from the cardinal, which included prolonged hugs and a physical advance that was perceived as an attempt to kiss one of the victims.
In response to the allegations, Cardinal Lopez Romero has publicly stated that he is taking a step back to avoid obstructing the investigation, which has resulted in his absence from public celebrations and pastoral activities. While he acknowledges the challenges presented by the situation and the legitimate concerns it raises, he firmly denies any involvement in sexual assault, violence, or harassment.
