CAN 2025: Anticipation Builds After TAS Hearing
The ongoing saga surrounding the CAN 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco has reached a pivotal moment, as the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) shared its initial impressions following a crucial hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS). The final, which took place earlier this year, initially saw Senegal claim victory over Morocco with a score of 1-0. However, this result has been shrouded in controversy, primarily due to protests from Senegalese players who temporarily left the field after a late penalty was awarded to the Moroccan side, the Lions of the Atlas.
In a surprising turn of events, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result in March, declaring Morocco the winners via a 3-0 decision based on the premise that Senegal had forfeited the match by abandoning the pitch. In response to this shocking decision, the FSF promptly filed an appeal with the TAS, seeking to reclaim their title from the controversial ruling. The TAS hearing took place behind closed doors in Lausanne, Switzerland, where both federations presented their arguments.
Following the hearing, Abdoulaye Sow, the FSF Secretary General, expressed satisfaction with the defense mounted by Senegal. "Our lawyers articulated our case effectively, presenting all necessary observations that were duly heard by the arbitration panel," he stated to RMC Sport. Sow further added, "Now, we await the TAS's decision, which may be announced in the coming days or weeks. While I cannot disclose the specifics of the deliberation, I assure you that Senegal defended itself well." Meanwhile, the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) chose not to comment immediately after the proceedings.
