In a significant move within the automotive industry, Volkswagen (VW), Europe's largest car manufacturer, is actively seeking innovative financial strategies for its battery subsidiary, Powerco. Establishing battery cell factories involves substantial investments, often reaching billions of euros, even before the first battery cell is produced. In light of this, VW is making strides in its plans for a new battery cell plant in Sagunt, near Valencia, as it has partnered with Chinese battery producer Gotion. This collaboration was announced by Gotion in a stock market release on Monday, with the factory slated to commence operations next year.
Furthermore, Powerco is also planning to acquire stakes in two additional Gotion projects located in Morocco and Slovakia. The announcement of the deal was made by Powerco on Monday afternoon, indicating a broader strategy to expand its footprint in the battery manufacturing landscape.
The three joint ventures in Spain, Morocco, and Slovakia represent a multi-billion euro battery deal, marking Volkswagen's first partnerships with a Chinese company in Europe. The Sagunt factory stands out as the largest project in this initiative, with plans to achieve an annual capacity of 30 Gigawatt-hours, which is sufficient to equip up to 500,000 electric vehicles with batteries. The total investment for the Sagunt facility is estimated to be around €2.3 billion, underscoring VW's commitment to enhancing its electric vehicle production capabilities.
