Wael Mohya: Borussia Mönchengladbach's Rising Star Considering International Switch to Morocco

Wael Mohya's Potential National Team Shift

As the countdown to the World Cup intensifies, national football associations are making significant moves, and one player who has captured attention is Wael Mohya. The 17-year-old talent from Borussia Mönchengladbach has confirmed that he has been contacted by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) regarding a potential switch of allegiance. Mohya, who made history by becoming the youngest goalscorer for Mönchengladbach, has previously represented the German U18 team on three occasions but holds dual citizenship due to his Moroccan heritage.

In an interview with "Kicker" on Sunday, Mohya acknowledged the contact from the Moroccan federation, stating, "There has been contact, yes. But I cannot say more about it. I have not made a decision yet and will take my time. Let’s see how things progress." However, it remains uncertain whether he would have an immediate opportunity to join Morocco's senior national team, especially with the North Africans set to face Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti in Group C during the upcoming World Cup next summer.

Impressive Rise in Bundesliga

This season, Mohya has emerged as a remarkable talent in the Niederrhein region, scoring his first professional goal in Munich this past March and making ten appearances under coach Eugen Polanski. According to the latest Bundesliga update from Transfermarkt, Mohya has seen a significant increase in his market value, rising by 7.5 million euros to a total of 10 million euros, making him one of the biggest gainers. He is now considered the most valuable German U17 player, second only to Hertha's Kennet Eichhorn, with only seven players in his age group globally having a higher valuation.

Although Mohya did not participate in the recent derby against 1. FC Köln, he has been nominated for upcoming international matches in the qualification round for the U19 European Championship 2027. As part of Coach Hanno Balitsch’s U18 squad, the attacking midfielder will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, and Austria in the qualifying matches.
