Wael Mohya on the Verge of Switching National Allegiance from Germany to Morocco

Wael Mohya's Potential National Team Switch

According to reports from 'Bild', a significant change is imminent for young football talent Wael Mohya, as he prepares to switch his national allegiance from Germany to Morocco. In March, the Borussia Mönchengladbach player confirmed that he had been approached by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). Recent discussions have reportedly become quite concrete, although the 'Rheinische Post' indicates that there is no new development at this time. It appears that an early decision regarding his national team future is not pressing; the 17-year-old may play a pivotal role in the upcoming U21 European Championship next year. With a market value of €17 million, he stands as the second most valuable U17 talent in Germany.

Reasons Behind the Switch

Wael Mohya has previously represented Germany at the U16, U17, and U18 levels. However, he recently declined an invitation to a DFB training camp to continue his development with his club. Among the reasons for his potential switch, besides his family roots, is the fact that the next FIFA World Cup will be hosted in Morocco. The tournament, set for 2030, will take place across six venues, with Morocco sharing hosting duties alongside Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Furthermore, Morocco's impressive performances in recent tournaments, including reaching the quarter-finals in the current World Cup and achieving a fourth-place finish in the previous one, have likely influenced his decision. Morocco is also the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champion.

The young star has made a significant impact at Gladbach, where he was a standout performer last season. In early March, he scored his first professional goal in Munich, making him the youngest goalscorer in the club's history. To date, he has made 17 appearances under coach Eugen Polanski. In the latest Bundesliga update, Mohya saw a remarkable increase in market value, rising from €10 million to €17 million, making him one of the biggest winners in his age group. Globally, only four players of his age have a higher market value, with only Kennet Eichhorn surpassing him in Germany.
