Waterbox Technology: A Game Changer for Reforestation in Arid Zones of Souss-Massa

Revolutionizing Reforestation in Arid Areas

The National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) has introduced the innovative Waterbox technology in the Souss-Massa region, aiming to enhance reforestation efforts in arid zones. This sophisticated system is designed to capture and gradually redistribute moisture to the roots of plants, significantly reducing evaporation and ensuring that young plants thrive in harsh climatic conditions.

Waterbox technology has emerged as a beacon of hope for reforestation initiatives in Souss-Massa, spearheaded by the ANEF. The dual objectives of this project are to optimize water usage and create optimal growth conditions for vegetation in semi-arid environments. According to Mohamed Hilali, the head of the Agadir-Inezgane forestry development district, the system utilizes a smart reservoir that surrounds the sapling at the time of planting. This reservoir collects natural moisture from rainfall and dew, redistributing it slowly to the roots. Consequently, this process not only limits evaporation but also safeguards young plants from extreme heat.

Impressive Results and Sustainable Development

Field trials have yielded remarkable results, with over 1,200 hectares successfully utilizing this technique in Souss-Massa in 2025, marking a significant achievement. Hilali notes that the survival rate of the saplings has exceeded 95%, growth rates of trees have improved dramatically, and irrigation water needs have been drastically reduced. These successes are particularly vital as the region faces severe water stress, characterized by a depleted aquifer and recurring drought spells.

Among the local plant species that benefit from this technology is the argan tree, which holds both economic and environmental significance for the area. In a move towards sustainability, the ANEF is also working on developing a locally produced model of the Waterbox. This initiative aims to lower costs, adapt the technology to Morocco's ecological specifics, and facilitate its deployment throughout the country.

The local communities, especially those in Amskroud on the outskirts of Agadir, have welcomed this initiative. They believe that Waterbox technology revitalizes the argan tree, which has been severely affected by drought, modernizes reforestation techniques, and enhances the sustainability of forest ecosystems.
