Fire Contained in Souss-Massa Region
On the evening of Monday, August 3, 2026, a wildfire ignited in the forested area situated between the communes of Aourir and Taghazout within Morocco's Souss-Massa region. The blaze rapidly expanded due to strong winds that fanned the flames across the dry vegetation, primarily composed of secondary grasses, and resulted in the emergence of multiple fire hotspots. This prompted a swift and robust response from emergency services.
Hicham Zahdi, the regional director of the National Agency for Water and Forests in Souss-Massa, reported that these winds significantly hindered firefighting efforts by transporting flames from one location to another, thereby exacerbating the situation. "The winds were carrying the flames from one place to another, which contributed to the dispersion of the fire hotspots," Zahdi explained in an interview.
However, by Tuesday, the authorities had managed to bring the situation under control, with firefighting teams actively engaged in extinguishing the remaining hotspots. Zahdi expressed cautious optimism, stating, "The situation is currently under control, and we hope weather conditions remain stable and that wind speeds do not increase so we can fully extinguish the remaining fires." In an effort to prevent any potential flare-ups, personnel from the Royal Gendarmerie, Auxiliary Forces, Civil Protection, and local volunteers continue to be deployed in the area.
According to Zahdi, the wildfire primarily affected secondary vegetation. Fortunately, the local argan trees, which are vital to the region's ecology and economy, experienced only minimal damage and were largely spared from the flames. Local sources reported that the fire originated near the village of Ikrdan in Aourir before spreading toward the neighboring Taghazout, necessitating an immediate mobilization of emergency services along with the support of volunteers from surrounding communities.
