Authorities Successfully Control Wildfire in Souss-Massa Region
In a decisive response to a wildfire that erupted on Monday evening in the forested region between the communes of Aourir and Taghazout, Moroccan authorities have successfully brought the situation under control. The fire was exacerbated by strong winds that fanned the flames across a landscape predominantly covered in secondary grass, creating multiple hotspots that necessitated a comprehensive emergency response.
Hicham Zahdi, the regional director of the National Agency for Water and Forests in Souss-Massa, highlighted the challenges posed by the winds, which were instrumental in spreading the fire from one location to another. He explained, "The winds were carrying the flames from one place to another, which contributed to the dispersion of the fire hotspots." Thankfully, by Tuesday, teams were able to assert control, focusing efforts on extinguishing the remaining active hotspots.
Zahdi expressed optimism regarding the firefighting efforts, stating, "The situation is currently under control, and we hope weather conditions remain stable and that wind speeds do not increase so we can fully extinguish the remaining fires." To bolster these efforts, personnel from the Royal Gendarmerie, Auxiliary Forces, Civil Protection, and local residents have remained on-site to mitigate the risk of any potential flare-ups.
Local reports indicate that the wildfire originated near the village of Ikrdan within the Aourir commune, subsequently spreading towards Taghazout. This prompted an immediate and dedicated mobilization of emergency services alongside volunteers from surrounding communities, all working in unison to combat the expanding flames. Fortunately, the predominant vegetation affected was secondary in nature, with argan trees largely spared from the worst of the fire's impact.
