Significant Decline in Women's Activity Rate in Northern Morocco
The activity rate of women in the northern region of Morocco, specifically Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, has been reported at approximately 24% for the year 2025. This marks a slight decrease from the 25% activity rate recorded in 2024, according to data released by the Regional Directorate of the High Commission for Planning. The findings, detailed in the 2025 Women's Employment Barometer, reveal that women constitute 25% of the total active population, which is approximately 1.44 million individuals, while men make up the remaining 75% of this demographic.
In terms of employment, the rate for women has dropped to 20.8% in 2025, down from 21.6% in 2024. Conversely, the employment rate for men stands at 64.3%, reflecting a minor decline from 64.5% the previous year. Interestingly, the unemployment rate among women has remained stable at 13.3%, which is consistent with the figure recorded in 2024, indicating that there has been little change despite the overall drop in the activity rate.
Moreover, the data highlights a significant disparity between urban and rural areas. In urban settings, the women's activity rate is reported at 20.1%, while in rural areas, it is notably higher at 31.7%. This represents a decrease from 20.4% and 33.9% respectively in 2024, suggesting that rural women continue to engage more actively in economic activities compared to their urban counterparts.
