Yasser Mounbir's Legal Battle: A Call for Freedom of Expression

The correctional court in Ain Sebaâ, Casablanca, has postponed the hearing of artist and painter Yasser Mounbir to August 28, 2026. Mounbir is currently facing charges related to "offending a constitutional institution and insulting a public official in the exercise of their duties." This case has attracted attention, particularly from the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), which organized a solidarity sit-in outside the courthouse, advocating for a fair trial and emphasizing the importance of respecting freedom of expression and creativity.

During his recent court appearance, the 22-year-old artist requested provisional release; however, this request was denied, marking yet another rejection of his appeals for temporary freedom, as confirmed by his support committee. The committee has expressed growing concerns over the nature of the charges against Mounbir, which they believe raises significant questions regarding the rights and freedoms of creative individuals in Morocco.

In the lead-up to the hearing, a petition supporting Mounbir was circulated, calling for the respect of fundamental rights and freedoms of opinion and expression. This petition encourages civic action to bolster solidarity with Mounbir and promote the values of thought and creativity, as well as cultural diversity in Morocco.

Yasser Mounbir is notably recognized for his street art, including murals and graffiti. He was arrested on June 15 and has since been held in preventative detention at Oukacha prison. The charges against him have sparked concern among the creative community, highlighting the ongoing challenges artists face in expressing their work freely.
