ZSystems Secures $1.65 Million to Revolutionize Morocco's Retail Sector

Transforming Morocco's Retail Landscape

In a remarkable stride towards modernization, ZSystems, a Casablanca-based startup, has successfully raised $1.65 million in seed funding aimed at revolutionizing Morocco's traditional retail sector, which is still predominantly reliant on paper transactions and personal agreements. This funding round was spearheaded by Azur Innovation Management, with continued contributions from existing investors such as MNF Ventures and Witamax, as well as new support from the Harambeans Prosperity Fund. This significant investment increases ZSystems' total funding to $2.7 million, following an earlier pre-seed round, highlighting the growing confidence in its vision and capabilities.

Founded in 2022 by a dynamic team including Samer Choumar, Meriem Benabad, Youssef Haddouch, Reda Nebri, and Youssef Drafate, ZSystems is developing a B2B2C digital marketplace that connects brands, wholesalers, and retailers. The startup is addressing a staggering $40 billion market that remains largely untouched by digital innovations, where persistent inefficiencies in sourcing, pricing, and distribution have hindered growth across various sectors. Despite the advent of modern supermarkets, the traditional retail format—comprising thousands of small neighborhood shops known as hanouts—continues to play a pivotal role in Morocco's economy.

Building a Digital Future for Retail

By establishing itself as a critical software layer for the B2B value chain in the region, ZSystems aims to tackle the vast fragmentation that characterizes this market. Rather than displacing existing wholesalers, the company focuses on enhancing intermediation, thereby ensuring that the current retail ecosystem can thrive while adapting to modern technological demands. ZSystems has gained recognition from the Moroccan Ministry of Industry and Trade as the national digital intermediation platform, with ambitious plans to onboard 50,000 retailers into the digital economy by the year 2030.

With the newly acquired funds, ZSystems plans to bolster product development, extend its platform's reach, and deepen its market penetration. The company's vision is to become an essential component in the logistics of goods distribution from manufacturers to local shelves across Morocco, and eventually throughout the North African region. Supported by the EBRD’s Star Venture programme and Amazon Web Services, ZSystems is poised for growth, aiming to facilitate a more efficient and profitable retail landscape in Morocco.
