Ceuta Operation: Spanish Police Returns Migrants to Morocco

Spanish Police Operates in Ceuta to Return Migrants to Morocco

On Monday, the National Police in Spain initiated a significant operation in Ceuta aimed at returning migrants to Morocco who entered the country between July 30 and 31. These individuals, currently housed at the Temporary Immigrant Stay Center (CETI), do not qualify for asylum and have had their requests for international protection denied. The operation has been prompted by the fact that the CETI has been operating at full capacity, with all 512 official places filled, necessitating urgent action to manage the situation.

According to information provided by police sources to EFE, the operation involves deploying units from the UPR (Prevention and Reaction Unit) and UIP (Police Intervention Unit) both within the CETI and in its surrounding areas. This strategic deployment aims to prevent many migrants from fleeing into the nearby mountains to avoid being processed by authorities. The primary objective is to facilitate the return of those migrants who entered at the end of July and whose asylum requests were rejected due to their lack of eligibility.

This operation marks a notable shift in approach, being the first of its kind in Ceuta. Previous operations primarily focused on migrants found on the streets and beaches, who were subsequently relocated to temporary reception centers. This new strategy reflects the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in managing migrant influxes responsibly and humanely.
