Morocco Showcases Its Experience in Water Policy Modernization

Morocco's Commitment to Sustainable Water Management

On October 26, 2026, the Kingdom of Morocco proudly showcased its ongoing efforts to modernize its water policy at the 17th session of the Arab Water Ministers Council held in Cairo. This initiative aligns with the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at ensuring an integrated, sustainable, and responsible management of water resources, thereby enhancing the Kingdom's water security. Morocco's presentation highlighted the significant transformations the country is undergoing in response to increasing water resource challenges, while also supporting its broader human, social, and economic development goals.

During this pivotal meeting, Morocco's ambassador to Egypt and its permanent representative to the Arab League, Mohamed Ait Ali, articulated the core principles underlying the country’s revamped water policy. He noted that the strategy is centered on three essential pillars: diversifying water sources through dam water, sustainable groundwater extraction, seawater desalination, and the recycling of treated wastewater. Furthermore, the policy aims to foster solidarity among various regions and uses, promoting equitable access to water resources and comprehensive, integrated benefits. A long-term planning approach is emphasized over immediate management tactics, ensuring a forward-thinking methodology in water resource planning.

Innovative Approaches and International Cooperation

Morocco has made significant strides in adopting innovative technologies and practices within the water sector, adhering to the vision set forth by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The ambassador underscored that the Kingdom remains open to international cooperation and partnerships as vital components in addressing the complex water challenges currently faced. The Moroccan government is particularly focused on developing comprehensive water resource management plans across its ten water basins, with the national water plan projected to be finalized by 2050.

Moreover, Morocco reiterated its call for unified and coordinated Arab efforts in upcoming forums related to water. This includes the United Nations Water Conference scheduled for December 2026 in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the World Water Forum set to take place in March 2027 in Saudi Arabia, which will feature the prestigious Hassan II Great World Water Prize, valued at $500,000, during its inaugural session. The ambassador encouraged partners to submit nominations for this esteemed award, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.

The 17th session of the Arab Water Ministers Council coincided with the 7th Arab Water Conference and gathered representatives from Arab nations, along with regional and international organizations specializing in water issues. The meeting's agenda addressed critical topics, including the implementation of the Arab Water Security Strategy for 2030 and progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water, as well as the preservation of Arab water rights.
