Court Delays Hearing on Fez Building Collapse Case
The primary criminal chamber of the Court of Appeals in Fez, Morocco, has announced the postponement of the case concerning the tragic collapse of two buildings in the Al-Masira neighborhood, where 22 lives were lost and 16 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. The next hearing is now scheduled for November 10, 2026.
This decision to delay the proceedings was made to ensure the presence of the Kingdom's legal representative and to allow some of the defendants additional time to appoint legal counsel to represent them in court. The unfortunate incident, which involved the collapse of two adjacent four-story buildings, occurred on December 10, 2025. Following the incident, a detailed interrogation of the 19 accused took place on July 23, 2026, resulting in charges against eight individuals currently in custody, while eleven others, including the head of the Zawiya district and his first and second deputies, were released under supervision.
This case has garnered significant attention due to the severity of the incident and the implications it holds for public safety and accountability in construction practices within the region. The court's decision to defer the session reflects the complexities involved in legal proceedings, especially in cases with such profound human impact.
