PhD Employees in Fes Call for Action Against Registration Fees

In a recent announcement, the preparatory committee of the employees and successful candidates in the PhD program at Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University in Fes expressed their strong disapproval of the newly imposed registration fees for working students. This decision has sparked significant controversy as it appears to contradict the fundamental principles of public education and equal opportunities. The committee articulated that this new policy undermines the commitment to free public education, which is a vital aspect of Morocco's educational framework.

On the same day, protests erupted on campus, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with what many perceive as a breach of previous commitments made by the university administration. These commitments included the acceptance of student registration files without any financial prerequisites. However, various academic institutions have reportedly refused to accept the registration documents from the affected students, further exacerbating the situation.

The committee pointed out that the registration fees, which could reach up to 20,000 dirhams annually, impose a considerable financial burden on working students, potentially totaling 80,000 dirhams over four years of study. This financial strain poses a serious threat to equal access to scientific research and academic progression, which are crucial for the development of Morocco's intellectual capital.

Moreover, the committee emphasized that the decision to impose these fees lacks clear legal justification and contradicts constitutional principles related to the right to education and equality. They have urged the university administration to honor its previous commitments and engage in meaningful dialogue with student representatives to resolve this issue amicably.

In light of these developments, the committee has vowed to continue its protests and solidarity actions, insisting on the immediate reversal of the imposed fees and the guarantee of unconditional registration rights for all students. Key actions planned include submitting registration files to the concerned universities, accompanied by judicial representatives to document instances of refusal legally, and organizing a central protest rally in front of the university president's office, starting at 11 a.m. Furthermore, they intend to reach out to human rights and labor organizations for support regarding their cause.

The committee concluded their statement by reaffirming their commitment to fighting for the rights of all students and advocating for free education, justice, and equal opportunities. They reiterated the need for an immediate withdrawal of the registration fees and the establishment of open communication channels with responsible authorities.
