Exploring Moroccan Poetry and Theatre: A National Symposium in Marrakech

On October 24, 2026, at 9:15 PM, the House of Poetry in Marrakech will host a national symposium titled "Al-Mahloon and Theatre: From the Poetic Expression to the Aesthetic of Performance." This event is organized in coordination with the Sheikh Jilali Amtirod Association and the Digital University Library, as part of the 11th edition of the 'Al-Mahloon and National Song Festival,' overseen by the Sheikh Jilali Amtirod Association. The symposium will delve into Moroccan experiences in theatrical adaptations of poetry and the construction of performance presentations.

According to the House of Poetry, the symposium will feature contributions from notable critics and researchers, including Hassan Bahrawi, Ahmed Zeniber, Mohammed Abu Saif, and Anas Al-Malhouni. A special segment will be dedicated by Sheikh Mustafa Akhlifi to present poetic readings that connect levels of discourse, thought, and practical models, drawing from the anthology of Moroccan poetry.

This national symposium is organized within the framework of the 11th edition of the 'Al-Mahloon and National Song Festival,' which is an annual event by the Sheikh Jilali Amtirod Association. It aims to foster critical thinking in matters concerning 'Al-Mahloon Art' and its intersections, particularly focusing on questions regarding 'poetry' and its realization in performance. The partners involved seek to enhance this critical approach and expand its future participation by advocating for the establishment of an academic day dedicated to 'The Poetry of Al-Mahloon.'

Critic Hassan Bahrawi will address the theme 'From the Poetic to the Performance,' while Ahmed Zeniber will explore the subject of 'Echoes of the Darkness,' examining the dialogue between the text and the rhetoric of presence. Dr. Mohammed Abu Saif will investigate the monodramatic aspects of Al-Mahloon poetry and its interaction with both human and non-human elements. Additionally, media figure Dr. Anas Al-Malhouni will discuss 'From the Measure of the Poem to the Rhythm of the Stage': dramaturgy of music and the competencies of the performing singer in constructing Al-Mahloon theatrical performances. The closing segment will be reserved for Sheikh Mustafa Akhlifi, who will present 'Sarada' poetic readings.

The symposium 'Al-Mahloon and Theatre: From the Poetic Expression to the Aesthetic of Performance' aims to initiate a scholarly and critical dialogue among researchers, poets, theatre practitioners, musicians, and artists. It aspires to refine the understanding of the relationships that bind Al-Mahloon poetry to theatrical performance. Furthermore, it seeks to explore new creative potentials that position Al-Mahloon as a significant contributor to the development of Moroccan theatre, drawing its language, imagery, and rhythms from national memory while simultaneously engaging with contemporary theatrical questions and aesthetic transformations.

Thus, the House of Poetry in Marrakech continues to partner with various collaborators to illuminate the bright spots in our culture related to poetic inquiries and the evolving 'Aesthetics of Performance' and 'Reception.' This ongoing poetic and cultural programming, marking its tenth season, seeks to further open up to new and contemporary fields concerning the relationship between poetry and multiple areas, aiming to root and cultivate its values and link them to various questions relevant to dialogue and knowledge contexts.
