In a significant effort to assess the social ramifications of tourism in Morocco, diverse stakeholders including tourism companies, civil society organizations, and local actors have united to investigate and propose enhancement opportunities. This initiative, spearheaded by the International Roundtable on Human Rights in Tourism, has successfully engaged over 65 local tourism stakeholders along the country's key tourist routes. Through extensive field research, expert interviews, and discussions with key stakeholders, the project identified crucial risks and opportunities within the tourism sector, culminating in actionable recommendations for both international and local tourism enterprises. The findings of this comprehensive report were officially released on October 15, 2026, with a webinar scheduled for November 11 to present the results, where interested parties can already register to participate.
The challenges outlined in the report highlight a somewhat limited awareness regarding environmental risks and child protection issues, alongside concerns related to the working conditions and rights of employees, such as tour guides. In response to these findings, the project partners are moving forward with initial measures, including the development of informational resources for local stakeholders in collaboration with the Confédération Nationale du Tourisme (CNT), as well as the provision of necessary support materials.
Core partners of this initiative include renowned entities such as EXO Travel, Intrepid Travel, Kneissl Touristik, and Brot für die Welt. These organizations collaborated closely with the Roundtable on Human Rights in Tourism to design the project, engage local partners, and conduct on-site assessments. The project also received support from the consulting firm Impact Experts based in Rabat, led by sustainability and tourism expert Abdelilah Lahchimi, who contributed his extensive knowledge of the Moroccan tourism sector. Additionally, Studiosus Reisen participated by sharing insights from its evaluations of local partners. Various other organizations have contributed to the initiative through financial support, expertise, and in-kind contributions, all aiming to lay a solid foundation for a more responsible and sustainable tourism model in Morocco.
