Fez Set to Host the National Exhibition of Ceramics and Zellige
Fez, Morocco is gearing up to host the second edition of the National Exhibition of Ceramics and Zellige from October 30 to November 8, 2026. This event will take place at the "Van Zone" area in the Oued Fez region under the theme "From Earth Clay to Handcrafted Creativity: Pottery, Ceramics, and Zellige as Timeless Moroccan Heritage." This initiative aims to highlight Morocco's artisanal legacy and strengthen the position of traditional crafts within the country's economic and cultural framework.
In a press conference held in Fez to unveil the program for this significant event, the President of the Traditional Industry Chamber of the Fez-Meknes region discussed the exhibition's goals and implications. He emphasized its importance in promoting the products of traditional artisans and opening new avenues for their marketing and promotion. Additionally, the exhibition serves as a platform for enhancing communication and sharing experiences among professionals and stakeholders in the sector.
Challenges and Contributions to the Ceramics Sector
The President of the chamber outlined the primary challenges facing the ceramics and zellige sector in the region, notably the scarcity of clay, which is a fundamental raw material for production. Furthermore, the lack of gas-operated kilns, which are essential for improving product quality and reducing environmental impacts, poses significant hurdles. He stressed the necessity of preserving handmade craftsmanship, providing both material and moral support to artisans, and enhancing training to transfer artisanal skills to younger generations, ensuring the continuity of this noble craft.
Moreover, he acknowledged the contributions made by various institutions and partners involved in organizing the exhibition, including the relevant ministry overseeing traditional industries, the Fez-Meknes regional authority, the regional council, the Fez municipal council, the Fez labor council, and the Fez region development company. He expressed gratitude for their support in mobilizing traditional artisans and ensuring the success of this event.
In this context, the chamber's president reiterated the importance of media coverage, both print and digital, for this national event, highlighting the media's role in showcasing the potential of traditional industries and the creativity of artisans, as well as the challenges they face. He stressed that preserving this heritage requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders to enhance the visibility of Moroccan ceramics and zellige, ensuring their continued significance in the artistic and architectural memory of the kingdom.
