Issa Diop Embraces His Moroccan Heritage
In a recent interview, Moroccan footballer Issa Diop expressed his conviction regarding his decision to represent Morocco instead of Senegal, affirming that his family has nothing to forgive him for this choice. Diop stated unequivocally, "They have not forgiven me because they have nothing to forgive. It was my decision," reflecting on the significance of his choice during a discussion with TWTD.
Diop, who is eligible to play for Morocco through his mother and could have represented Senegal through his father, emphasized that his international football experience has contributed significantly to his personal and professional growth. He remarked, "I think I have learned different things because playing for your country is not the same as playing for your club," highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities that come with national representation.
Reflecting on his inaugural World Cup experience, Diop acknowledged that while there was room for improvement, he considers it a valuable learning opportunity. He stated, "We could have done better, but it remains a good experience," indicating his commitment to developing as a player and contributing to the Moroccan national team.
When asked about the ongoing dispute between Morocco and Senegal regarding the African Cup of Nations title, Diop mentioned, "It is in front of the justice system, so we just have to wait for the decision. We will see, I believe the decision will be good." At 29 years old, Diop has already made 12 appearances for Morocco since committing to the national team earlier this year, including five matches during the World Cup.
