Jordan's Government Endorses Extradition Treaty with Morocco
In a significant development that underscores the strengthening of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Jordan, the Jordanian Cabinet convened on Tuesday to approve a draft law endorsing the extradition agreement signed between the two nations. This decision paves the way for the agreement to be presented to the Jordanian Parliament for formal ratification, as detailed in an announcement from the Jordanian Prime Ministry.
In a separate statement, the Jordanian Embassy in Rabat highlighted that the initiative aligns with the strong ties shared between the two brotherly countries and aims to enhance cooperation across various sectors, adhering to the principles of law.
Last September, Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi and his Jordanian counterpart Bassam Talhouni signed the treaty aimed at the extradition of individuals wanted for crimes or those sentenced to imprisonment. This agreement reflects the deep-rooted fraternal relations between the two countries and their commitment to bolster legal and judicial cooperation while developing more effective mechanisms for combating crime, as noted by the Jordanian Ministry of Justice.
The same ministry emphasized that the agreement is part of Jordan and Morocco's dedication to enhance their existing judicial and legal cooperation framework. It also aims to improve collaboration in crime-fighting efforts, including the extradition of individuals sought by justice for crimes or those serving sentences issued by judicial authorities in either country in accordance with national laws and legal regulations.
Following the signing ceremony, Bassam Talhouni remarked that the Jordanian-Moroccan relations are historically profound, established by the late King Hussein of Jordan and the late King Hassan II of Morocco. He noted that under the guidance of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this agreement marks a significant step forward in their cooperative journey.
Talhouni further stated that the treaty represents a crucial advancement in legal and judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco, providing a more effective legal framework for organizing extradition procedures. This, in turn, contributes to achieving justice, combating crime, and preventing impunity. He highlighted that the signing of this agreement is a testament to the exceptional relations between Jordan and Morocco and reflects both countries' commitment to expanding judicial cooperation and sharing expertise and information.
The Jordanian official also emphasized that enhancing international judicial cooperation is increasingly important in light of the rapid developments in crime. Therefore, having clear legal frameworks that regulate cooperation between countries and ensure the effectiveness of procedures, while respecting the rule of law and established legal guarantees, is of paramount importance.
