Yassmine Benchrifa: A Rising Star in Moroccan Dance
This weekend, the vibrant city of Bobigny in France becomes the stage for Moroccan dancer Yassmine Benchrifa, who is set to perform a solo piece inspired by her life experiences. Over the course of 27 minutes, she will showcase a journey that traces back to her roots in Morocco, where she honed her skills and received her first accolades at a dance competition in Marrakech. A pivotal moment in her career was meeting the renowned choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen, who played a significant role in inviting her to the prestigious Festival d’Automne in Paris, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey.
A Journey Through Dance: From Hip-Hop to Contemporary
At the tender age of 12, Yassmine Benchrifa discovered her passion for hip-hop, captivated by the energy and expressive nature of the dance form. However, her trajectory took a transformative turn in 2017 when she began exploring contemporary dance under the mentorship of choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou. The following year, she joined Nafass, Morocco's first contemporary dance school, where she continued to incorporate hip-hop elements into her evolving style. By 2019, Yassmine made her mark with her first choreographic piece, titled 'Her Life,' which showcased her experimental approach to dance.
Her journey of growth continued in Marrakech, where she secured the first prize at the 2024 Taklif contemporary dance competition. During this time, Bouchra Ouizguen, a celebrated Moroccan choreographer, took notice of Yassmine's work at the On Marche festival. Two years later, she was honored to receive an invitation to perform at the Festival d'Automne in Paris, further establishing her as a noteworthy artist on the international stage.
In her upcoming performance, Yassmine will present 'Incendia,' her first professional solo created in 2025 and previously showcased in Marseille. She draws inspiration from her personal life changes, emphasizing the impact of transitions on identity. 'Each transition defines a part of who we are,' she reflects, and this philosophy is woven into the fabric of her dance.
Scheduled for October 24 and 25 at the MC93 in Bobigny, 'Incendia' is part of the Mediterranean Season 2026. Yassmine's performance will commence at 4:30 PM in the Christian Bourgois hall, followed by Bouchra Ouizguen presenting her own solo work, 'Qunfudh,' an hour later. This event not only highlights Yassmine's artistic prowess but also celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Morocco within the heart of Paris.
