Morocco Enhances Military Capability with Israeli Technology in Armored Vehicles

Morocco Upgrades Armored Vehicles with Cutting-Edge Israeli Turret Technology

In a significant move to bolster its military capabilities, Morocco is set to equip its armored vehicles with the UT30 MK2 turret, a sophisticated 30mm system developed by Israeli defense company Elbit Systems. This decision comes five years after the Spanish military initially evaluated the same technology but ultimately opted for a different domestic competitor in 2021. The juxtaposition of these two military decisions underscores the evolving landscape of defense procurement in both countries, with Morocco now choosing to adopt technology that had previously been sidelined in Spain.

According to a report published recently, the WhAP armored vehicles, which are being assembled in Berrechid, Morocco, will feature this advanced turret system. The UT30 MK2 is designed to enhance the combat capabilities of these eight-wheeled vehicles, integrating an automatic cannon along with options for a coaxial machine gun and anti-tank missiles, depending on the specific configuration chosen. This move marks a strategic shift for Morocco, which aims to modernize its armed forces and increase self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.

Military Collaboration and Future Prospects

The decision to adopt the UT30 MK2 turret aligns with Morocco's broader defense strategy, which includes not only the assembly of armored vehicles but also the development of related armaments. The Moroccan Military Industry, under the leadership of CEO Kaduri Naor, is establishing production facilities to manufacture these turrets and their associated munitions. Notably, a factory near Casablanca is already operational, with plans for a second munitions plant underway in Sidi Yahya. The first demonstration of an armored vehicle equipped with the UT30 MK2 turret took place at an expo in Marrakech earlier this month, with the Royal Armed Forces expected to receive their initial deliveries by March 2027.

This strategic development reflects Morocco's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities, while also showcasing its collaboration with international defense technology providers. The initiative not only strengthens national security but also creates industrial jobs and promotes technological advancement within the country, aligning with Morocco's ambitions to become a key player in the regional defense sector.
