Morocco Experiences Significant Growth in Bank Card Payments in 2025

Morocco's Bank Card Payment Surge in 2025

In a remarkable shift reflecting the evolving financial landscape, Morocco recorded a striking 20% increase in bank card payment transactions in 2025. This surge was accompanied by a notable rise in the total value of these transactions, reaching MAD 70.8 billion (approximately $7.24 billion). According to Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), the official central bank of Morocco, the total number of bank card transactions hit 230.1 million. This data showcases not only the growing acceptance of electronic payments but also highlights a gradual shift from traditional cash withdrawals to card-based transactions.

While the figures indicate a positive trend for card payments, cash withdrawals still dominated the landscape of bank card usage in Morocco. In 2025, cash withdrawals increased by 12%, from 401 million transactions in 2024 to 450 million in the following year, with a total value that climbed to MAD 403 billion (around $47.01 billion). This trend underscores the ongoing reliance on cash, despite the increasing convenience offered by electronic payment methods.

Shifts in Transaction Patterns

According to BAM's annual report, the share of card payments in overall transactions has seen a gradual increase. In 2025, payments accounted for 34% of total card transactions, rising from 32% in the previous year. This shift marks a growing inclination among Moroccan consumers to opt for card payments over cash withdrawals, although the latter still represented 66% of transactions by number, down from 68% in 2024. In terms of transaction value, cash withdrawals maintained their stronghold, accounting for 87% of the overall value of card transactions.

The landscape for electronic payments in Morocco is evolving, with electronic payment terminals seeing significant growth. Transactions through these terminals increased by 20%, from 153.3 million to 184.5 million, with a total value of MAD 58.6 billion ($5.99 billion). Furthermore, e-commerce payments witnessed a notable expansion, with a 16% rise in the number of transactions, totaling 44.8 million and a 10% increase in total value to MAD 12.1 billion ($1.24 billion). These developments indicate a promising trend towards embracing digital payment solutions in the Moroccan economy.
