Morocco Strengthens Military Ties with Israel Through David's Sling Missile Defense System

Morocco Negotiates with Israel for Advanced Missile Defense System

Morocco's military collaboration with Israel continues to strengthen, particularly in the realms of defense, security, and intelligence. Currently, Morocco is in negotiations to acquire an advanced missile defense system known as "David's Sling." This sophisticated shield has been jointly developed by the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense giant Raytheon, boasting a range of up to 300 kilometers and designed to intercept high-caliber threats. Reports from both nations indicate that negotiations are progressing significantly, with Morocco aiming to integrate this shield into the defense system of its armed forces.

Morocco's strategy involves establishing a multi-layered air defense network, and it is already utilizing Israeli systems such as the Barak MX and the Spyder. The necessity of such advanced systems is underscored by the geopolitical dynamics in the region, especially as Morocco seeks to bolster its military capabilities.

Strengthening Alliances and Regional Security

The formal alliance between Morocco and Israel was established in December 2020 under the Abraham Accords, facilitated by the United States. This partnership has positioned Israel as one of Morocco's primary arms suppliers, second only to the United States. Furthermore, Rabat is also in discussions to procure LORA ballistic missiles, which are highly accurate and can reach targets up to 400 kilometers away. The approval of Washington is essential for these acquisitions, but given the strong ties between Rabat and the Trump administration, the likelihood of obtaining these advanced military systems appears favorable.

The implications of a 300-kilometer operational range, along with possible enhancements such as the LORA ballistic missiles, would significantly impact areas like the Canary Islands, located approximately 100 kilometers off the Moroccan coast. Importantly, cities such as Ceuta and Melilla, along with southern Spanish regions like Seville and Murcia, fall within this radius, complicating potential air operations and altering defensive planning strategies.
