Morocco's Ambitious Plan for Desalination: Aiming for 1.8 Billion Cubic Meters by 2031

Morocco's Strategic Desalination Initiative

In a significant move to bolster the nation’s water security, Morocco has announced an ambitious plan to mobilize 1.8 billion cubic meters of seawater through desalination by the year 2031. This initiative was outlined by the Head of Government, Ms. Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, during a joint plenary session of both Houses of Parliament held in Rabat. The strategic approach aims not only to enhance the availability of water resources but also to diversify and strengthen the overall water supply across various regions of the country.

El Mansouri emphasized that the government's strategy hinges on the acceleration of the construction of desalination plants, which will play a crucial role in addressing the increasing water demand, particularly in arid and semi-arid zones. Furthermore, the plan includes the enhancement of water storage capacities through the construction of additional dams to support regions that struggle with water scarcity. This multifaceted strategy is designed to ensure that water resources are managed sustainably, without compromising the ecological balance of affected areas.

Long-term Vision for Water Sustainability

To ensure that Morocco achieves its water security objectives, the government is committed to developing a National Water Plan. This comprehensive framework will guide the country’s long-term water policy, taking into account the unique natural, climatic, economic, and social characteristics of different regions. It aims to align public policies related to water management with those of agriculture, energy, environment, and land use planning, thereby fostering a coherent approach to resource management.

In addition to water security, El Mansouri also highlighted the government's dedication to enhancing energy security through the accelerated development of renewable energy sources, targeting an increase to over 52% of the energy mix by 2030. The strategic focus will also include the promotion of green hydrogen initiatives and the gradual implementation of gas infrastructure projects, demonstrating Morocco's commitment to a sustainable and efficient energy future.
