NATO and Morocco Strengthen Regional Security Cooperation

NATO and Morocco Discuss Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism

In a significant diplomatic encounter, Javier Colomina, the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, made his third official visit to Rabat on October 6 and 7, 2026. This visit, which involved discussions with high-ranking Moroccan officials, underscores Morocco's strategic role as a key partner in the region. The talks focused on the current state of relations between NATO and Morocco, regional security dynamics, and prospects for enhancing cooperation based on a solid foundation developed over the past three decades.

During these discussions, Colomina and Moroccan officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the Royal Armed Forces addressed pressing security challenges, including terrorism, maritime security, and other emerging threats that are particularly relevant in the context of North Africa and the Sahel region. "Morocco is a key partner in the region, and our cooperation can only strengthen," Colomina stated, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing these challenges.

Furthermore, Colomina participated in a conference dedicated to small arms and light weapons, co-hosted by NATO and Morocco. This event marked the first regional conference on this critical issue organized with partner countries and was part of the implementation of NATO's Southern Neighbourhood Action Plan, which received approval during the Washington summit in 2024. The conference emphasizes NATO's commitment to enhancing security measures and fostering partnerships that contribute to stability in the region.
