United Nations Commends Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project for Energy Expansion in Africa

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has recently expressed its strong support for the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, highlighting its significance as a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing energy accessibility throughout Africa. This ambitious project is set to connect 13 African nations, thereby bolstering regional energy interconnection and fostering economic growth across the continent. The remarks were made by ECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete during a dialogue session with the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee, held in New York under the theme "Regional cooperation in an age of fragmentation." The discussions centered on how improving trade, transport, and connectivity can significantly contribute to sustainable development goals.

During the meeting, Gatete underscored the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline as a pivotal example of cross-border energy infrastructure designed to counteract the persistent electricity deficits that plague many African countries. He elaborated that this project not only aims to provide natural gas supplies throughout West Africa but is also projected to extend these resources to other regions, thus addressing a critical need for energy in numerous countries. Describing the pipeline as one that traverses 13 nations, Gatete emphasized its potential to supply energy to a wider array of African states, ultimately aiding in the continent’s energy security.

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, also referred to as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP), represents a strategic collaboration that commenced in 2016 between Nigeria and Morocco. This pipeline is designed to transport Nigerian natural gas through several West African countries, with future extensions anticipated to reach European markets. According to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the proposed pipeline network will stretch approximately 6,800 kilometers, of which about 5,100 kilometers will be offshore infrastructure. The estimated cost of this monumental project is around 26 billion dollars, marking it as a substantial investment in regional energy security.

Furthermore, ECOWAS has projected that the infrastructure will not only enhance electricity generation but also stimulate industrial growth, improve agricultural productivity, and create numerous job opportunities across the participating nations. Gatete acknowledged the critical challenge posed by inadequate electricity supply, which has hindered foreign investment and obstructed economic transformation across Africa. With around 600 million Africans still lacking access to electricity, he stressed the urgent necessity for significant investments in energy infrastructure to remedy this deficit.

The ECA chief also highlighted the importance of regional power pools, asserting that interconnected electricity systems are crucial for creating favorable conditions for investors. Alongside energy connectivity, he pointed out that mobilizing domestic resources and enhancing creditworthiness are essential components for achieving sustainable development in Africa. In terms of economic integration, Gatete noted that 50 African countries have ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, with 44 of the 54 signatories developing national implementation strategies with ECA’s technical assistance. Currently, intra-African trade constitutes about 17 percent of the continent's overall trade, a figure significantly lower than those seen in Asia and Europe.

In conclusion, Gatete reiterated that the reinforcement of energy infrastructure, along with improved regional trade and connectivity, is vital for Africa to leverage its abundant natural resources for industrial development and sustained economic growth. As reported by realnewsmagazine.net.
