Rising Consumer Prices in Morocco: A Closer Look at September's Inflation

Morocco's Consumer Price Index Sees Notable Increase in September 2026

In September 2026, Morocco experienced a notable increase in its consumer price index, which rose by 1% compared to August. This rise has been primarily driven by a significant 1.6% increase in food prices, alongside a 0.4% increase in non-food prices, as reported by the High Commission for Planning (HCP). The data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by consumers as essential goods become increasingly expensive.

Among the food items, the prices of meat and vegetables surged by 4.3%, while dairy products, including milk, cheese, and eggs, saw a rise of 1.6%. Additionally, the costs of mineral water, soft drinks, and juices increased by 0.2%, while fruits experienced a modest increase of 0.1%. Conversely, there was a slight decline in the prices of fish and seafood, which dropped by 0.4%, and coffee, tea, and cocoa decreased by 0.3%. Notably, fuel prices also contributed to the inflationary trend, with an increase of 2% in non-food products.

Regionally, Laâyoune reported the highest monthly inflation rate at 2.8%, followed closely by Beni Mellal at 2.4%. Other cities, such as Guelmim, Marrakech, and Rabat, also experienced notable increases of 1.6%, 1.4%, and 1.3% respectively. In contrast, Al Hoceima saw a slight decrease in prices, down by 0.3%.

When comparing the current data to September 2025, consumer prices have increased by 0.5%. This year-on-year analysis reveals a 2.8% rise in non-food prices, while food prices have declined by 2.5%. Moreover, core inflation, which excludes volatile prices and those regulated by the government, witnessed a month-on-month increase of 0.5% and a year-on-year rise of 0.6%, indicating persistent inflationary pressures in the Moroccan economy.
