The Tangier-Tetouan Train Project: A Step Closer to Reality?

Revisiting the Tangier-Tetouan Train Connection

As of October 26, 2026, the reinclusion of the rapid regional train project linking Tangier and Tetouan in the infrastructure proposals of the 2027 Finance Bill has reignited discussions about the future of rail connectivity in the Tetouan region. Local aspirations are high for the realization of this long-awaited project, which promises to enhance transportation in the area after years of anticipation.

The information detailed in the memorandum indicates that the project is part of a broader investment plan totaling approximately 38 billion dirhams, designated for the development and upgrading of various railway projects. These include the rail connection to the Port of Nador West Mediterranean, electrification of the line between Fez and Oujda, and the enhancement of the railway segment between Kenitra and Fez.

If realized, the establishment of a rapid regional line between Tangier and Tetouan is expected to significantly contribute to the transportation infrastructure in the region. Its potential role in facilitating passenger movement between the two cities, alleviating traffic on existing roadways, and enhancing connectivity among the economic and tourist centers in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region cannot be understated.

Furthermore, the project is anticipated to stimulate tourism and improve the attractiveness of the area for investment by providing a more efficient transportation option that links two major urban and economic hubs in northern Morocco.

On the parliamentary front, the railway connection project has been a focal point of advocacy by MP Monsef Atoub. He has previously directed written inquiries to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics regarding the status of related studies, as well as the necessary timeframes and funding required for its implementation.

This advocacy aligns with ongoing demands to integrate Tetouan into the national railway network and to enhance transportation infrastructures in the region, particularly in light of the discussions surrounding the development of Morocco's railway system by 2055.

Despite the project's inclusion in the list of planned railway initiatives, its actual realization remains contingent on clarifying several details, including its financial cost, proposed route, station locations, as well as the phases of execution and the anticipated timeline.

It is noteworthy that the financial envelope of 38 billion dirhams encompasses multiple railway projects and is not solely allocated for the Tangier-Tetouan line. This makes the unveiling of the independent budget for the project and its execution timelines among the most awaited pieces of information by the region's residents.
