A Heartfelt Journey of Remembrance and Solidarity
The poignant story of a father traversing Morocco with the memory of his deceased son ever-present unfolds with deep emotional resonance. Unlike fictional narratives filled with plot twists, this account is steeped in reality. Rafa Méndez feels an overwhelming sense of 'satisfaction' as he engages in altruistic work, despite witnessing the hardships and poverty that surround him. Over the span of ten days and more than 4,000 kilometers, Rafa has received an outpouring of gratitude, which he now attempts to process back in Asturias. His journey serves as a tribute to his son César, who tragically lost his life in an accident at El Musel in 2024. The expedition was part of a charitable initiative organized by the association bearing César's name, which operates under the motto 'No child without childhood.' The mission of this rally, which traversed the desert and mountains from Tangier to Merzouga, was clear: 'To do our part.'
During this remarkable adventure, which involved 38 vehicles and 82 participants, Rafa witnessed the stark inequalities present in a country that welcomed him with open arms and a cup of tea. He observed children walking barefoot and wearing tattered clothing, their appreciation evident for even the smallest gifts, from candies to caps. In the mountains, he encountered a boy who bore a striking resemblance to César. Moved by the moment, Rafa gifted him a T-shirt, symbolizing a piece of his son that would remain in the Atlas Mountains. Meanwhile, another piece of César returned with Rafa to Asturias, fueling his commitment to continue helping others and ensuring that memories of his son live on.
