Hakimi Addresses Controversy Following Africa Cup of Nations Final

Not only has the Senegal national team lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) challenging the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to award the title to Morocco, but the discussion surrounding the match has escalated significantly. Achraf Hakimi, the captain of the Moroccan team, shared his thoughts on this contentious issue during an interview with the 'Movistar' network, following Paris Saint-Germain's 2–0 victory against Liverpool in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals held on Wednesday evening.
Hakimi expressed his complex emotions regarding the final, stating, "Those were challenging moments filled with tension inside the stadium. I don’t take pride in the image we portrayed due to the towel incident. Nevertheless, the team displayed commendable competitiveness. We respected both our opponent and the tournament itself." This comment referred to the incident where Moroccan players attempted to take Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's towel, which has since become a symbol of the match's controversies.
Hakimi Supports CAF's Decision and Emphasizes PSG's Champions League Goals
In addition, the Moroccan defender condemned the actions of the Senegalese team while voicing his support for CAF's ruling to award the title to Morocco. He remarked, "What needs to happen is currently under evaluation, and we hope for a decision that benefits African football." Hakimi further asserted, "We aspire to claim the title because we believe we deserve it, and it's unacceptable to leave the pitch under such circumstances." Meanwhile, reflecting on his club's performance, he expressed disappointment at the narrow victory over Liverpool, saying, "After creating several clear chances, it’s frustrating not to have a larger win margin, but overall, we are pleased with the team's performance."
Hakimi took this opportunity to reaffirm Paris Saint-Germain's determination to compete for the Champions League title, stating, "As I have previously mentioned, this team should not be underestimated. We are the reigning champions and have consistently demonstrated our capabilities. Whenever others believe we are finished, we rise to the occasion. We are aware of the crucial phase of the season we are in, and we aim to maintain this momentum and advance as far as we can." Nevertheless, he cautioned against complacency regarding Liverpool in the return leg, emphasizing, "Football can change rapidly. Anfield is a notoriously difficult venue. We must maintain our utmost focus and not treat qualification as a foregone conclusion.
