Morocco Emerges as Africa's Industrial Leader
The African Development Bank's manufacturing index for 2025 has revealed a significant shift in the industrial power dynamics of the continent, with Morocco successfully claiming the top position in manufacturing, surpassing South Africa, which had long held the crown. According to the report, Morocco achieved a score of 0.8415 compared to South Africa's 0.8396, highlighting a narrow margin that underscores the fierce competition between these two industrial giants.
The report emphasizes that this transformation is not merely a reflection of industrial output volume; rather, it is based on a composite set of indicators that includes the diversity of the production base, the complexity of industrial processes, and the ability to integrate into global value chains. Over the past two decades, Morocco has built a robust industrial momentum, driven by targeted manufacturing and export strategies, bolstered by significant investments in infrastructure, industrial zones, and major ports.
South Africa's Industrial Challenges Amidst Morocco's Ascendancy
Conversely, while South Africa continues to maintain a substantial industrial presence on the continent, its performance has gradually declined in some key indicators. Meanwhile, Morocco has steadily enhanced its footprint in strategic sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and electrical and chemical industries, positioning itself as an industrial hub primarily targeting European and international markets.
The African Development Bank's index concludes that 41 African nations have improved their industrial performance between 2010 and 2024, with an overall rise in manufacturing levels across the continent by 6 percent. Nevertheless, disparities among countries remain, as Morocco's ascension to the top spot signifies a remarkable transformation in the African industrial landscape, gradually reshaping the economic power centers within the continent.
