African Lion 2026: A Landmark Collaborative Military Exercise in Tunisia

Strengthening Regional Security through African Lion 2026

On April 13, 2026, military leaders from the U.S., Tunisia, and various international partner nations gathered at El Aouina Air Base in Tunisia for the official inauguration of Exercise African Lion 2026. This notable event marks the beginning of U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint military exercise, aimed at enhancing the collective security capabilities of the U.S., African nations, and their global allies. Running from April 20 to May 8, 2026, the exercise is co-led by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and will take place in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, involving over 5,600 personnel from more than 40 nations. The exercise is designed to foster regional security through innovative partner-led initiatives.

This year is particularly significant as Tunisia celebrates its 10th consecutive year as a host nation for African Lion. The exercise not only serves as a platform for military cooperation but also emphasizes the importance of crisis response preparedness in a complex global security landscape. "African Lion 2026 is focused on strengthening readiness across a combined and joint force, advancing shared understanding among partners, and enhancing interoperability in preparation for crisis response," remarked Eldridge Browne, chief of exercises for SETAF-AF. This commitment to collaboration builds upon the successes of previous iterations, reinforcing the collective ability to combat terrorism and bolster regional security.

Comprehensive Training and Modern Warfare Tactics

With over 7,000 military personnel from more than 30 nations participating across the four host countries, African Lion 2026 showcases an impressive scale of international military integration. Approximately 560 military personnel are currently deployed in Tunisia, with NATO allies such as France and Italy joining forces to conduct synchronized training maneuvers. The collaborative effort aims to enhance multinational response capabilities through a curriculum laden with academic symposiums and practical field training events. The focus is on integrating combined arms operations, command post simulations, and advanced planning modules to ensure seamless interoperability among diverse military structures.

Essential competencies under evaluation during the exercise include chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense, with the Wyoming National Guard partnering with Tunisian forces under the State Partnership Program to address these critical threats. Moreover, the training encompasses air-to-ground integration, counter-improvised explosive device strategies, and special operations maneuvers, while also emphasizing strategic discussions on cyber warfare to tackle contemporary digital threats. The U.S. contingent in Tunisia exemplifies a comprehensive Total Force approach, integrating active-duty soldiers with personnel from the National Guard, Army Reserve, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps.

By establishing standardized procedures and nurturing professional military relationships between Tunisian, European, and African counterparts, Exercise African Lion 2026 reinforces a collective pledge to regional stability, adhering to the principle of peace through strength. As the exercise host, Tunisia underscores its role as a regional leader committed to promoting stability and addressing shared security challenges effectively. As reported by army.mil.
