African Lion 2026 Kicks Off with International Military Cooperation
In a significant display of military collaboration, the Moroccan and American armed forces have commenced the 22nd edition of the "African Lion" exercise, running until May 8, 2026. This event is being organized under the High Instructions of His Majesty the King, the Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces. The official launch took place at the Southern Zone Headquarters in Agadir, attended by representatives from participating countries, highlighting the event's international scope and importance.
The opening ceremony was co-chaired by Major General Mohammed Benlouali, Chief of Staff for the Southern Zone, alongside Brigadier General Daniel Cederman, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF). During this ceremony, the overarching concept for the exercise and the related activities were presented, emphasizing the strategic importance of this military partnership aimed at enhancing cooperative defense capabilities among allied nations.
"African Lion 2026" brings together over 5,000 military personnel from around 40 participating and observing countries. The operations will take place across various locations, including Benguérir, Agadir, Tan-Tan, Taroudant, Dakhla, and Tifnit. The exercise comprises a wide array of activities, including tactical maneuvers, land, maritime, and aerial operations, conducted during both day and night. Additionally, there will be special forces exercises, airborne operations, and a command post exercise, further showcasing the multifaceted nature of modern military training.
This exercise not only strengthens military readiness but also serves as a platform for fostering international relations and enhancing the interoperability of forces from different nations, reinforcing the commitment to peace and security in the region and beyond.
