Agadir Allocates 1.1 Billion Dirhams for the Reconstruction of Hassan II Hospital

Agadir's Major Healthcare Investment

The Moroccan government has embarked on an ambitious project to reconstruct the Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir, with a significant investment of approximately 1.1 billion dirhams. This decision was announced during a meeting led by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tehraoui, alongside Saïd Amzazi, the Wali of the Souss-Massa region. Originally constructed in 1961, the current facility has faced challenges in meeting modern healthcare standards, prompting the need for a complete overhaul. The hospital is scheduled to close temporarily at the end of March 2026 to facilitate these extensive renovations.

A State-of-the-Art Hospital to Serve the Community

The new Hassan II Hospital will feature a cutting-edge design across four levels, equipped to accommodate between 415 to 450 beds, thereby significantly enhancing the healthcare capacity in the region. The project emphasizes the importance of emergency services, incorporating a strengthened SAMU (Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente) and expanding oncology services, both crucial areas identified for improvement in the Souss-Massa region. This reconstruction aligns with the government's broader structural reforms aimed at enhancing the national healthcare system.

To ensure continuity of care during the construction phase, the Ministry has devised a strategic plan that redirects patients to alternative facilities. Emergency cases, expectant mothers, and hospital admissions will be referred to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, while routine consultations and examinations will be conducted at a newly established day clinic on-site. Health centers in the region will continue to fulfill their roles in patient guidance, and a reorganization of human resources will be implemented to respect the rights of the involved personnel.
